    His parents were Virginia Loxley and Donald Jardine. He has a brother named Neal Jardine.

    Al Jardine joined the Beach Boys in 1961. He was a high school friend of Brian Wilson and initially approached Wilson with the idea of forming a band.

    Jardine played bass on the group's earliest recordings but left briefly to attend college.

    He returned in 1963, this time taking on the role of rhythm guitarist and contributing vocals.

    His return solidified the classic lineup of the Beach Boys (alongside Brian, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love and later Bruce Johnston), and he became an essential part of their signature harmonies and sound.
